Union Minister of Communications, Mr. Jyotiraditya Scindia, during his keynote at the World Wi-Fi Day Conference organised by the Broadband India Forum, projected Wi-Fi to become a Rs. 1,83,000 crore (US$ 21.2 billion) sector in India by 2035. He described Wi-Fi as a transformative force powering digital empowerment and inclusion, emphasising that connectivity is no longer a luxury but a fundamental necessity, comparable to access to capital or infrastructure in earlier decades. He highlighted India's contribution to 46% of global digital transactions, crediting this progress to the affordability of data in India, Rs. 9 (US$ 0.10) per gigabyte (GB) against a global average of Rs. 214.29 (US$ 2.49).
The Minister praised Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi’s PM-WANI (Wi-Fi Access Network Interface) initiative as a key driver of grassroots digital inclusion. He stressed the role of deregulated spectrum, particularly the recent de-licensing of the six gigahertz (GHz) band, which will facilitate low-cost, high-speed digital infrastructure. Policy rules for this spectrum are expected to be announced before Independence Day 2025. He called on industry players to ensure affordability in hardware to avoid new barriers in connectivity. He concluded with a call to action: “Connectivity is not a commodity; it is an act of nation-building,” urging stakeholders to use Wi-Fi to transform rural India, empower citizens, and strengthen public service delivery.
