Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to finalise the FTA by the end of 2025, in line with the direction set by Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi and President of the European Commission, Ms. Ursula von der Leyen. Talks focused on achieving a mutually beneficial, balanced, and equitable trade pact that deepens economic ties while respecting each other’s priorities and sensitivities.
Discussions covered key issues, including non-tariff measures, industrial tariff lines, and sectoral sensitivities such as steel, automobiles, and the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Mr. Piyush Goyal, emphasised India’s concerns and called for preferential treatment for labour-intensive sectors to ensure a fair outcome. Both sides agreed to intensify technical-level talks to resolve pending issues, with the EU’s Directorate-General for Trade set to visit India next week. He highlighted India’s commitment to building a transparent and predictable trade framework that supports shared growth, innovation, and sustainable prosperity between India and the EU.
