Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, Mr. Piyush Goyal, emphasised that sustainability is central to India’s growth journey, while inaugurating the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) General Meeting Exhibition organised by the Bureau of Indian Standards. He said India’s cultural respect for nature underpins its commitment to the Paris Agreement and circular economy principles, noting that the country’s climate actions stem from responsibility rather than external pressure. He highlighted that harmonised global standards enhance product quality, facilitate free trade, and create opportunities for stronger international cooperation. He also underlined that quality reduces costs by cutting waste and improving efficiency, making high standards essential for consumer safety and competitiveness.
He cited the government’s Zero Defect, Zero Effect vision, which aims to combine world-class quality with minimal environmental impact, ensuring India’s products earn global trust. He pointed to successful Quality Control Orders, such as those for toys, which eliminated substandard products and encouraged high-quality domestic manufacturing. Stressing that standards are a strategic tool for consumer welfare and climate action, he called for international collaboration to build a standardised and sustainable future. He expressed confidence that India’s growing electrical and electronic industry will play a key role in energy efficiency, pollution reduction, and the creation of reliable, eco-friendly products.
