Pradhan Mantri-Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM)

India has taken significant strides in strengthening its health system through the Pradhan Mantri-Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM), launched on October 25, 2021. With an investment of Rs. 64,180 crore (US$ 7.31 billion) from FY22 to FY26, the Mission aims to build a resilient, accessible, and self-reliant public health system. PM-ABHIM strengthens primary, secondary, and tertiary care by establishing and upgrading 9,519 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (AAMs), 5,456 Urban AAMs, 2,151 Block Public Health Units (BPHUs), 744 Integrated Public Health Laboratories (IPHLs), and 621 Critical Care Hospital Blocks (CCBs) across India. The programme also integrates an IT-enabled, real-time disease surveillance network, enhances pandemic preparedness, promotes health research, and expands human resource capacity, ensuring a timely response to outbreaks and public health emergencies. These initiatives build on the National Health Mission, National Health Policy 2017, and Ayushman Bharat scheme, collectively advancing India’s goal of Universal Health Coverage and strengthening community-based healthcare delivery.
PM-ABHIM complements global health frameworks, including the 2025 WHO Pandemic Agreement, which promotes equitable access to vaccines, diagnostics, and therapeutics while strengthening international coordination in prevention, preparedness, and response. The Mission’s community-focused, multi-tiered infrastructure expansion ensures robust service delivery, especially in underserved urban and rural areas. It supports India’s progress towards Sustainable Development Goal 3, including ending communicable diseases by 2030. By enhancing diagnostic, surveillance, and critical care capabilities, PM-ABHIM has positioned India to respond effectively to future pandemics and public health challenges, while ensuring equitable and quality healthcare for all citizens.
