NPCI International Payments Ltd (NIPL), the international arm of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NTT DATA Japan to enable Unified Payments Interface (UPI) acceptance in the Japanese market. The partnership will allow Indian tourists to make seamless payments at merchant locations acquired by NTT DATA by scanning QR codes through their existing UPI applications. NPCI stated that the agreement marks a key step towards strengthening digital payment linkages between India and Japan, enhancing convenience for Indian travellers.

NTT DATA Japan, which operates CAFIS, Japan’s largest card payment processing network, will collaborate with NIPL to facilitate UPI acceptance across its merchant network. This initiative comes amid rising travel between the two countries, with more than 2.08 lakh Indian visitors travelling to Japan between January and August 2025, reflecting a 36% increase over the same period in 2024. Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NIPL, Mr. Ritesh Shukla, said the collaboration with NTT DATA will significantly improve the digital payment experience for Indian travellers and simplify cross-border payments. The move is part of India’s broader efforts to expand UPI’s global footprint and strengthen digital financial connectivity.
