India’s satellite communications (SATCOM) sector is set for robust growth, with the market expected to double over the next few years, Union Minister for Communications Mr. Jyotiraditya M. Scindia said. Highlighting the government’s proactive approach, he noted that three SATCOM licenses have already been issued and that regulatory frameworks and licensing processes are being formalised. He emphasised that these measures provide a clear pathway for market expansion and set the stage for India to emerge as a key player in global satellite communications.
He also underlined India’s early-mover advantage in 6G technology. He stated that India is actively participating in the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) standard-setting and protocol development, with several proposals, including the concept of a ubiquitous network, already accepted. The 6G standards and protocols are expected to be finalised by 2027-28, with full-scale execution, including equipment and chip manufacturing, anticipated around 2030. He highlighted the multifaceted applications of 6G, from artificial intelligence (AI)-driven solutions and holograms to advanced surgical processes, while noting that the current focus remains on 5G use cases, many of which will be showcased in upcoming exhibitions. Regarding the suggestion by the Broadband India Forum to create a separate SATCOM license category, he clarified that the matter will be deliberated by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), respecting the regulator’s mandate.
