India’s dairy sector has expanded rapidly in the past 11 years, recording 70% growth and emerging as the fastest-growing dairy market globally, according to Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Mr. Amit Shah. Speaking at the inauguration of Sabar Dairy’s new plant in Haryana, he highlighted that under the leadership of Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi, the sector has grown both in scale and capacity, making India the world’s top milk producer. The number of milch animals has risen from 86 million in 2014-15 to 112 million, while milk production has increased from 146 million tonnes to 239 million tonnes. Per capita milk availability has also jumped from 124 grams to 471 grams, directly benefiting over eight crore farmers linked to the sector.
The newly constructed Sabar Dairy plant, built for Rs. 325 crore (US$ 36.6 million), is the country’s largest facility for curd, buttermilk, and yogurt, with daily production capacities of 150 metric tonnes of curd, three lakh litres of buttermilk, 10 lakh litres of yogurt, and 10 metric tonnes of sweets. The plant is expected to generate significant direct and indirect employment while catering to the entire Delhi NCR and northern states. He also reiterated the government’s vision under White Revolution 2.0, targeting procurement of 1,007 lakh kg of milk per day by 2028-29 and establishing modern dairy infrastructure nationwide. He further assured that by 2029, every Panchayat will be equipped with a cooperative Samiti, strengthening the cooperative system and ensuring higher incomes for farmers.
