India’s copper demand rose 9.3% YoY to 1,878 kilo tonnes (KT) in FY25, driven by robust economic growth and increasing adoption across key sectors, according to the International Copper Association (ICA) India’s latest report. Demand stood at 1,718 KT in FY24. The report attributed this growth to expanding infrastructure, building construction, renewable energy, and consumer durables sectors, highlighting copper’s critical role in India’s clean energy and industrial transformation. The building construction and infrastructure segments registered 11% and 17% growth, respectively. In comparison, the consumer durables segment surged 19% due to higher sales of air conditioners, fans, and other appliances.
ICA India Managing Director, Mr. Mayur Karmarkar, said copper demand reflects India’s industrial momentum and policy focus on renewable energy, sustainable mobility, and infrastructure. He emphasised the need for India to strengthen domestic supply chains and develop functional copper reserves to meet the Viksit Bharat @2047 vision. He added that enhancing local copper fabrication and promoting import substitution will be key to sustaining growth and ensuring long-term resilience in India’s industrial ecosystem.
