India has retained its third position on the U.S. Green Building Council's (USGBC) annual list of the top 10 countries and regions for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) in 2024. 370 projects, covering 8.5 million gross square meters (GSM), were certified for LEED in India. China topped the rankings with over 25 million GSM certified, followed by Canada with 10 million GSM. This recognition reflects India's commitment to adopting sustainable and resilient building practices and contributing to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030. LEED certifications in India are managed by Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI), which supports the country’s green building movement.

India’s real estate market continues to align with sustainable practices, with significant growth in LEED-certified projects, especially in Operations and Maintenance (O+M), which led to 153 projects. The certification process has expanded beyond commercial spaces to include industrial, residential, and educational sectors, reinforcing the country’s commitment to net-zero emissions by 2070. MD – Southeast Asia & Middle East at GBCI, Mr. Gopalakrishnan Padmanabhan, emphasized that India’s ongoing push for sustainability is central to improving community well-being and mitigating climate change. The United States (US) remains the largest market for LEED certifications. However, India’s progress inspires other nations to adopt green building practices for a sustainable future.
