India has emerged as the world’s fourth-largest renewable energy producer with an installed capacity of 257 GW, a three-fold increase from 81 GW in 2014, according to Union Minister for New & Renewable Energy, Mr. Pralhad Joshi. Speaking at the eighth session of the International Solar Alliance Assembly, he highlighted that India’s solar capacity surged from 2.8 GW in 2014 to 128 GW in 2025. Solar module manufacturing capacity has grown from 2 GW to 110 GW, while solar cell manufacturing expanded from zero to 27 GW.

He noted that under the leadership of Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi, India achieved its Nationally Determined Contribution target of 50% capacity from non-fossil sources five years ahead of schedule. The country’s renewable energy tariffs, including solar, battery, and green ammonia, are among the lowest globally. He added that the International Energy Agency expects India to become the world’s second-largest renewable market. At the same time, the International Renewable Energy Agency recognises India as an energy transition powerhouse. India also plans to contribute Rs. 221 crore (US$ 25 million) to the Africa Solar Facility under the International Solar Alliance to support mini-grids and distributed renewable investments, reinforcing its commitment to equitable clean energy growth across the Global South.
