India Achieves Tier 1 Status in Global Cybersecurity Index 2024

India has achieved a major milestone in its cybersecurity journey by securing Tier 1 status in the Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI) 2024, released by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). With a commendable score of 98.49 out of 100, India now stands among 'role-model' nations, demonstrating a strong commitment to global cybersecurity standards. As the nodal agency representing India, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) played a pivotal role in this accomplishment. Minister of Communications, Mr. Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, lauded the achievement as a proud moment for Bharat, emphasizing its reflection of India's robust telecom sector and cybersecurity initiatives. The GCI 2024 assessed national efforts across legal, technical, organizational, capacity development, and cooperation pillars, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation.

India's remarkable performance in cybersecurity results from several initiatives aimed at enhancing cyber resilience. The Government of India has established strong frameworks for cybercrime laws and cybersecurity standards, equipping its legal institutions to address cybersecurity threats. Sectoral Computer Incident Response Teams (CSIRTs) provide technical support and incident reporting, further strengthening India’s cyber capabilities. Education and awareness have also been key components of India’s cybersecurity strategy, with cybersecurity integrated into school curricula and public campaigns promoting secure online practices. International collaborations, skill development initiatives, and government incentives have also driven research, innovation, and capacity-building, solidifying India’s leadership in global cybersecurity.
