Mr. Shiv Nadar, Founder and Chairman of HCL Technologies emerged as India’s most generous businessman by donating Rs. 2,042 crore (US$ 245.4 million) in the last financial year that results in an average of Rs. 5.6 crore (US$ 0.60 million) and 76% more than the amount he donated in FY22.
According to the EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2023, around 119 Indian business tycoons donated over Rs. 5 crore (US$ 0.60 million) in FY23 which eventually contributed to Rs. 8,445 crore (US$ 1.01 billion) for philanthropic activities and shows more than 59% of what all donated in FY22.
Mr. Azim Premji of Wipro followed Mr. Shiv Nadar who donated Rs. 1,774 crore (US$ 213.2 million) during the year and showed 267% more than FY22.
The third position was occupied by Mr. Mukesh Ambani of Reliance Industries who gave Rs. 376 crore (US$ 45.2 million) in philanthropy channelled through the Reliance Foundation, wherein the focus is predominantly on education and health care. Mr. Nikhil Kamath of Zerodha emerged as the youngest philanthropist on the list as there was a donation of Rs. 110 crore (US$ 13.2 million) in the year.
The list further showed that Ms. Rohini Nilekani of Rohini Nilekani Philanthropies led among women, donating Rs. 170 crore (US$ 20.4 million). She ranked 10th on the list followed by Ms. Anu Aga (40th rank) and Ms. Leena Gandhi (41st) with donations worth Rs. 23 crore (US$ 2.8 million) each. Seven women philanthropists were featured in the list.
14 Indians in all, compared to just six the previous year, gave more than Rs. 100 crore (US$ 12 million). The list also revealed that 47 Indians gave more than Rs. 20 crore (US$ 2.4 million), while 24 Indians—up from 12, the previous year—donated more than Rs. 50 crore (US$ 6 million).
62 philanthropists have donated a total of Rs. 1,547 crore (US$ 185.9 million) towards education, making it the most popular cause. Then came Rs. 633 crore (US$ 76.1 million) for health care and Rs. 1,345 crore (US$ 161.6 million) for the arts, culture, and heritage. Mumbai emerged as India's charity capital with 39 participants, ahead of New Delhi (19) and Bengaluru (13). Other philanthropists featured in the top 10 included Mr. Kumar Mangalam Birla, Mr. Gautam Adani, the Bajaj family, Mr. Anil Agarwal, Mr. Nandan Nilekani, and Cyrus and Adar Poonawalla of Serum Institute of India.
The contribution made by Mr. Kumar Mangalam and his family came from personal funds of about Rs. 75 crore (US$ 9 million). This is the first time the Bajaj family has been listed. Donations from Mr. Anil Agarwal and his family, on the other hand, rose 46% over FY22.
According to Mr. Anas Rahman Junaid, Managing Director, and Chief Researcher of Hurun India, in the past five years, there have been increments in terms of donors contributing over Rs. 100 crore (US$ 12 million) from two to 14 and those donating over Rs. 50 crore (US$ 6 million) rose from five to 24.
