Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Mr. Nitin Gadkari, on October 9, 2025, announced that the government is constructing 25 greenfield expressways spanning 10,000 km at a total investment of Rs. 6,00,000 crore (US$ 67.57 billion), during the 120th Annual Session of the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI). He highlighted that 75-80% of the strategic Zojila Tunnel, which will provide all-weather connectivity between the Ladakh region and the rest of India, has been completed. He added that monetisation of road projects could generate Rs. 15,00,000 crore (US$ 168.92 billion) for the highway ministry. He noted that the development of expressways and economic corridors has already reduced India’s logistics costs from 16% to 10%, with further reduction to 9% expected by December 2025, enhancing competitiveness compared with 12% in the United States (US) and Europe and 8-10% in China.
On the automobile sector, he said India aims to become the world’s largest automobile market within five years, with the industry growing from Rs. 14,00,000 crore (US$ 157.66 billion) to Rs. 22,00,000 crore (US$ 247.75 billion), providing employment to 4,00,000 youths and contributing the highest Goods and Services Tax (GST) to central and state governments. He underscored the economic and environmental burden of fossil fuel dependence, costing Rs. 22,00,000 crore (US$ 247.75 billion) annually and emphasised the adoption of clean energy. He also called for a focus on agriculture, citing farmers’ additional earnings of Rs. 45,000 crore (US$ 5.07 billion) from ethanol production using corn.
