Coal India Limited (CIL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) to set up the ‘Centre for Sustainable Energy’ at the institute. The MoU, signed by Director (Technical), CIL, Mr. Achyut Ghatak, and Director, IIT Madras, Mr. V. Kamakoti, in the presence of Chairman, CIL, Mr. P.M. Prasad, along with senior officials from both organisations, aims to drive cutting-edge research and capacity-building in sustainable energy technologies. Supported by CIL’s funding, the Centre will focus on repurposing coal mines, developing low-carbon technologies, and reimagining coal as a key feedstock for India’s clean energy transition, reinforcing the nation’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070.
Chairman, CIL, Mr. P.M. Prasad, highlighted that this collaboration marks a historic step in Coal India’s evolution from a traditional energy provider to a driver of sustainable growth, focusing on energy security, decarbonisation, and socioeconomic progress. Director, IIT Madras, Mr. V. Kamakoti, emphasised the importance of industry-academia partnerships in advancing India’s low-carbon economy. The Centre will also nurture talent through Ph.D., postdoctoral, and internship programs, equipping the next generation of researchers and engineers to lead India’s green energy transformation. This initiative positions Coal India and IIT Madras at the forefront of the country’s sustainable energy innovation and human capital development.
