Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Mr. Piyush Goyal, holds meeting with electronics industry stakeholders on implementation of Quality Control Orders

Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Mr. Piyush Goyal, convened a meeting in Delhi with key stakeholders from the electronics sector to discuss the implementation of horizontal Quality Control Orders (QCOs). The objective was to enhance consumer safety by ensuring higher quality standards for electrical appliances across India. Terming the interaction as productive, the minister emphasised that the discussions centered on the rollout of horizontal QCOs aimed at strengthening product safety and compliance while addressing growth prospects and boosting global competitiveness in the industry.
Quality Control Orders are legal instruments under the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Act that mandate conformity of specific goods to Indian standards. Once in force, manufacturers must obtain BIS certification and label their products accordingly, ensuring they meet essential safety, reliability, and performance benchmarks. Non-compliance may lead to legal penalties and restrictions on selling uncertified products. Horizontal QCOs extend across multiple product categories within a sector, promoting standardisation across the board. BIS, the National Standards Body of India, facilitates standardisation, conformity assessment, and quality assurance, forming the basis for third-party certification schemes. This move aims to establish a uniform quality framework covering a wide range of appliances for the electronics sector, supported by policy measures and industry cooperation to spur innovation and export competitiveness.
