Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi inaugurates SEMICON India in New Delhi, highlighting India's expanding semiconductor and electronics ecosystem and efforts to attract global investment into the sector. The three-day event brings together semiconductor producers, equipment manufacturers, component suppliers, potential partners and customers as India seeks to establish a stronger position in the global chipmaking industry. The event features more than 600 exhibitors, over 150 speakers and 300 global companies across 15,000 square metres of exhibition space, along with startup showcases and a student hackathon. India's semiconductor and electronics industry have expanded significantly over the past decade, with the government seeking to build capabilities in higher value-added manufacturing and strengthen the country's role in global supply chains. The semiconductor push is also aligned with efforts to expand manufacturing, increase exports and support the transition of workers towards higher-paying industrial employment.
The SEMICON event comes around two months after India announced an additional Rs. 1.9 lakh crore (US$ 19.8 billion) in subsidies to support domestic semiconductor and electronics production. The government is seeking to attract global semiconductor manufacturers, equipment makers and parts suppliers while supporting Indian companies that are developing capabilities in the sector. The growing investment in artificial intelligence is also creating additional demand for advanced semiconductor technologies and related manufacturing capabilities. The event provides a platform for industry stakeholders to explore partnerships, investment opportunities and supply-chain linkages. India's semiconductor strategy forms part of its broader effort to modernise manufacturing and develop higher value-added industries, while strengthening domestic production and export capabilities. The government's continued policy support and the participation of major international companies are expected to contribute to the development of India's semiconductor ecosystem and its integration with global semiconductor supply chains.
