Within just 24 hours of going live, over 1.55 lakh candidates have applied for the Prime Minister Internship Scheme, surpassing the target of 1.25 lakh applicants. As per the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, 1,55,109 candidates registered for internships on the portal since its launch at 5 pm on Saturday. Open to individuals aged 21-24 years, the scheme offers internships commencing on 2nd December with monthly financial assistance of US$ 59.49 (Rs. 5,000) for 12 months, along with a one-time grant of US$ 71.39 (Rs. 6,000) for each intern. The pilot project, announced in the 2022-23 Union Budget, is expected to cost US$ 95.2 million (Rs. 800 crore).

The portal has added over 80,000 internship opportunities across 24 sectors in the past week, including oil, gas, and energy, travel and hospitality, and automotive. The scheme aims to provide opportunities for candidates to intern in the top 500 companies in India through an objective, socially inclusive, and tech-driven process. Interns are selected through Aadhaar-based registration, and the portal offers tools like bio-data generation for efficient access to internships across sectors.
