The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) is set for a major transformation, aiming to become a global economic leader by 2047 with a GDP of over a trillion dollars and a population of nearly four crore. The region, comprising Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and Raigad districts, spans 6,328 square kilometers and is poised for significant economic and infrastructural growth through a long-term plan focusing on sustainable and inclusive urban development. By 2047, MMR is expected to achieve a GDP of around Rs. 1,05,57,600- 1,31,97,000 crore (US$ 1.2-1.5 trillion), with per capita income exceeding Rs. 33 lakh (US$ 37,510.32) annually, equivalent to current levels in Japan and Italy. The region's population is projected to grow from 2.58 crore in 2023 to around 2.9 crore by 2030, and to 3.6-3.8 crore by 2047. The plan includes developing new financial districts, tourism hubs, and industrial cities, as well as improving per capita open space and expanding the metro network to 450 km by 2030.
The transformation is backed by over Rs. 4 lakh crore (US$ 45.46 billion) worth of ongoing and planned infrastructure projects, including the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail, Navi Mumbai International Airport, and the Mumbai Coastal Road. The plan also aims to align MMR's liveability and inclusivity standards with those of Singapore, London, and Tokyo. By 2047, the region aims to achieve 90% electrified public transport, 70% renewable energy use, and 30-40% water recycling. Employment is projected to rise from one crore in FY23 to 1.3 crore by 2030 and two crore by 2047, with significant job creation in high-productivity sectors such as IT, artificial intelligence, finance, media, and chip manufacturing. The plan also targets net-zero emissions by 2047 and increasing women's workforce participation to 38-40% by 2030.
