Mr. Nitin Gadkari launched Bharat NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme)

The Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat NCAP), which aims to improve road safety by raising vehicle safety requirements for up to 3.5-tonne vehicles in India, was launched on August 22, 2023, in New Delhi by the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Mr. Nitin Gadkari.

While addressing the gathering, he remarked that this was a historic step towards empowering consumers for being able to make a better choice for buying safer cars.

In addition, Bharat NCAP, according to Mr. Nitin Gadkari, will significantly improve vehicle safety and quality in India while encouraging healthy competition among original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to produce safer cars.

According to the minister, the new safety regulations under AIS-197 and Bharat NCAP are advantageous to both customers and manufacturers. They also play a crucial role in safeguarding the lives of citizens and making our Automobile Industry the number one auto manufacturing hub in the world.

The Programme is applicable to M1 category type-approved automobiles with GVWs under 3.5 tonnes. The base versions of a certain model will be tested in this voluntary programme.

This programme, which is based on Automotive Industry Standard (AIS) 197, will commence on October 1, 2023. The programme's goal is to establish a competitive safety enhancement ecosystem that raises customer awareness. By comparing the performance of various vehicles in crash tests, consumers may make well-informed decisions.

NCAP gives OEMs the chance to produce cars that meet international safety regulations. The Central Institute of Road Transport (CIRT) will anchor the programme.
