Median salary of Indian unicorn founders rises to US$ 1,79,662 (Rs. 1.5 crore) overall in FY23

According to a study by PrivateCircle Research, the median salary for founders of Indian unicorn companies increased to US$ 1,79,662 (Rs. 1.5 crore) in the financial year 2022-23. The Financial Express reported that female founders had a median salary of US$ 1,19,774 (Rs. 1 crore), while male founders earned a median of US$ 2,15,594 (Rs. 1.8 crore). The study analysed 114 companies valued at US$ 1 billion or more, focusing on the top seven sectors with the highest number of unicorns. The media and entertainment sector had the highest median founder salary at US$ 4,19,211 (Rs. 3.5 crore), followed by the logistics and edtech sectors with median salaries of US$ 2,27,572 (Rs. 1.9 crore) and US$ 1,91,639 (Rs. 1.6 crore), respectively. Additionally, the study highlighted significant variations in average salaries, with the logistics sector having the highest average founder salary at US$ 1.49 million (Rs. 12.4 crore), likely influenced by outliers.

The research also highlighted regional differences in founder salaries. Pune stood out with the highest average and median founder salaries, at US$ 2.40 million (Rs. 20 crore) and US$ 4,43,166 (Rs. 3.7 crore), respectively. This was largely attributed to FirstCry CEO Supam Maheshwari, whose remuneration in FY23 totalled US$ 23.95 million (Rs. 200.7 crore).
