Karva Chauth, the widely celebrated Hindu festival observed by married women across India, has generated an estimated business of Rs. 28,000 crore (US$ 3.16 billion) nationwide, with Delhi contributing around Rs. 8,000 crore (US$ 901.81 million), according to the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT). The festival, marked by women observing a nirjala fast (without food or water) for the well-being and longevity of their husbands, has brought vibrant activity to markets, malls, and shopping streets across the country. In Delhi, major markets including Chandni Chowk, Sadar Bazar, Sarojini Nagar, Lajpat Nagar, Karol Bagh, Rajouri Garden, and Connaught Place were packed with shoppers purchasing traditional Karva Chauth items such as sarees, lehengas, pooja thalis, sieves, earthen pots, sweets, jewellery, cosmetics, and gift items. Beauty parlours, mehndi artists, and salons also witnessed long queues, providing significant employment opportunities to artisans and small service providers.
Member of Parliament from Chandni Chowk and Secretary General of CAIT, Mr. Praveen Khandelwal, noted that festive business has risen sharply compared with previous years, with Rs. 22,000 crore (US$ 2.48 billion) recorded in 2024 and Rs. 15,000 crore (US$ 1.69 billion) in 2023. The recent goods and services tax (GST) rate cuts and Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi’s call to “sell and buy Swadeshi” have further boosted purchasing power and contributed to record sales. In addition to retail activity, large-scale community Karva Chauth gatherings were organised nationwide. CAIT emphasised that the festival is not only a celebration of love and devotion but also a major driver of domestic trade, benefiting millions of small traders and local shopkeepers across India.
