The number of Indians taking 2 or more international trips has surged by 32% over the past year, with the UAE, Thailand, and the USA leading popular destinations. Emerging destinations include Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, and Bhutan, according to MakeMyTrip's ‘How India Travels Abroad’ report for June 2023 to May 2024. co-founder and Group CEO of MakeMyTrip, Mr. Rajesh Magow, attributed this rise to increased disposable incomes, greater global exposure, and easier travel. He noted the changing dynamics in international travel behaviour driven by macroeconomic factors, which present new opportunities for the travel industry.

The report highlights steady international travel search volumes year-round, with December being the peak month. The October-December quarter sees the most searches for short-haul destinations. At the same time, April to September is preferred for mid and long-haul travel. Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Delhi lead international travel searches, while the UK, Australia, and Germany are top student destinations. Interest in emerging destinations has increased, with searches for Almaty and Baku growing by 527% and 395%, respectively.

Additionally, there is a 10% rise in searches for business-class flights, and luxury travel is becoming more popular. South Asian destinations like Pokhara and Pattaya are favoured for budget stays. At the same time, searches for homestays and villas have increased by 42%, with Bali, Dubai, and Singapore being prominent. Leisure travel accounts for 55% of international trips, with Thailand being the top choice.
