According to a Migration Policy Institute (MPI) study, Indian migrants have become the largest group of educated immigrants in the U.S., representing 14% of the global pool of educated migrants. As of 2022, over 14 million college-educated migrants resided in the U.S., with 48% of those arriving between 2018 and 2022 holding a college degree; among them, 2 million were Indian nationals. The report highlights that India (14%) and China (about 8%) are the top countries of origin for educated immigrants, with a notable 20% of new college graduates from these countries arriving from India during the specified period.

The data also reveals that 68% of college-educated immigrants were under 55 years old, surpassing the 61% of U.S.-born graduates in the same age group. In the fiscal year 2022-23, over 72% of approved H-1B visa petitions allowing U.S. companies to hire foreign professionals were for Indian workers. Furthermore, in the 2022-23 academic year, 1.1 million international students were enrolled in U.S. higher education, with 71% being Asian and India contributing 267,000 students, highlighting the significant role of Indian migrants in the U.S. workforce and education system.
