CEO of developer platform GitHub, Mr. Thomas Dohmke, recently announced his arrival in India by sharing a 2008 photo from his previous visit to Bengaluru. Reflecting on the significant changes since then, he highlighted the incredible energy and rapid infrastructure evolution, mirroring the country’s booming software industry. He noted that India is poised to become the global leader in artificial intelligence (AI) and projected that by 2027, India will surpass the United States as the largest software developer community on GitHub. GitHub, acquired by Microsoft in 2018 in a US$ 7.5 billion stock deal, sees India’s software developers, currently the second largest on the platform, playing a crucial role in this transformation. Indian companies like Infosys, Cognizant, Paytm, and MakeMyTrip are early adopters of AI technologies like Copilot, demonstrating significant productivity improvements of up to 55%. Despite 200,000 computer science graduates annually, there is still a higher demand for software developers than the supply.

Mr. Dohmke emphasized GitHub's role in fostering collaboration and innovation among software developers, particularly in AI, with over 4 million organizations building their private source code on the platform. GitHub offers free access to its tools, including Copilot, for open-source developers and students aiming to integrate this experience into their professional lives. Partnerships with companies like Infosys include opening a centre of excellence to upskill employees using GitHub and Copilot, enhancing their AI expertise for customers. GitHub also has commercial interests in India, selling products to companies like Paytm and MakeMyTrip to boost their productivity. India’s growing prominence in the software and AI sectors, coupled with the vibrant developer community on GitHub, positions it as a future leader.
