With global demand for Indian spirits increasing, the government plans to promote alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages in international markets, aiming for US$ 952.9 million (Rs. 8,000 crore) in exports over the next few years. The Agricultural & Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), part of the commerce ministry, highlighted that India currently ranks 40th in global alcoholic beverage exports and has significant untapped potential. As part of the 'Make in India' initiative, APEDA aims to boost exports to major international destinations, with a target of US$ 1 billion in export revenue.

In 2023-24, India's alcoholic beverage exports exceeded US$ 262.1 million (Rs. 2,200 crore), with key markets including the UAE, Singapore, Netherlands, Tanzania, Angola, Kenya, and Rwanda. APEDA announced that Diageo India (United Spirits Ltd.) would launch 'Godawan,' a single-malt whisky from Rajasthan, in the United Kingdom. Mr. Vinod Giri, Director General of the Brewers Association of India, noted that while single-malt whisky will enhance India's reputation as a high-quality producer, volumes will come from more accessible products such as premium Indian whiskies and rums. He identified the US, Africa, and Europe as regions with substantial export potential. He recommended that the government encourage states to integrate export promotion into state excise policies.
