India is set to elevate its railway capabilities with the development of Vande Bharat 4.0, designed to meet both domestic and export demand for modern trainsets, Union Minister for Railways, Mr. Ashwini Vaishnaw, announced during the inauguration of the 16th International Railway Equipment Exhibition (IREE) 2025. The next-generation train will benchmark global standards in technology, passenger comfort, and safety, featuring enhanced seating, improved toilets, and finer coach workmanship, with rollout targeted within 18 months. Vande Bharat 3.0 already competes with international trains, accelerating from 0 to 100 kmph in 52 seconds while producing lower noise and vibration, and the 4.0 version aims to surpass these performance metrics.
The modernisation drive includes dedicated high-speed passenger corridors designed for speeds of up to 350 kmph, contributing to the planned 7,000 km of dedicated routes by 2047 under the Viksit Bharat vision. The Amrit Bharat trains are also being upgraded to version 4.0, with push-pull locomotives set for testing within 36 months. Safety upgrades include deployment of Kavach 4.0, India’s indigenous automatic train protection system, with Kavach 5.0 supporting 350 kmph operations. Highlighting India’s green technology push, he unveiled a 2400-horsepower hydrogen-powered train developed entirely domestically.
