India is rapidly positioning itself as a global leader in the hydrogen sector, with a strong emphasis on green hydrogen, according to Co-President of S&P Global Commodity Insights, Mr. Dave Ernsberger. Highlighting India’s progress in clean energy, he noted that the country’s development of hydrogen capabilities, particularly through its focus on green hydrogen, is impressive. He cited the National Green Hydrogen Mission as a key driver, describing it as a pivotal initiative for India’s energy independence and a cornerstone in the global transition to cleaner energy. Launched on January 4, 2023, with an outlay of Rs. 19,744 crore (US$ 2.22 billion), the Mission aims to make India a global hub for green hydrogen production, usage, and export, targeting 5 million metric tonnes (MMT) per annum by 2030.
India’s abundant renewable energy resources and strong industrial infrastructure position it well to lead in this sector. Ernsberger emphasised that collaboration between the government, private sector, traders, and supply chains will be crucial to advancing the industry. On September 11, 2025, Union Minister of New & Renewable Energy, Mr. Pralhad Joshi inaugurated the first Annual Green Hydrogen R&D Conference in New Delhi and launched a Rs. 100 crore (US$ 11.3 million) Call for Proposals to support start-ups in hydrogen innovation, providing up to Rs. 5 crore (US$ 563,316) per project for pilot technologies in production, storage, transport, and utilisation. With 25 start-ups showcasing innovations from electrolysers to Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven optimisation and biological hydrogen solutions, India is not only scaling domestic capabilities but also laying the foundation to become a major exporter of green hydrogen in the coming years.
