India's sustainable tourism market to touch Rs. 1,848.96 crore (US$ 216 million): MakeMyTrip founder

India's sustainable tourism market is projected to grow significantly, reaching Rs. 1,848.96 crore (US$ 216 million) over the next decade, up from the current Rs. 316.72 crore (US$ 37 million), according to Founder and Chairman of MakeMyTrip, Mr. Deep Kalra. Speaking at a travel conclave organised by the MakeMyTrip Foundation, Mr. Deep Kalra highlighted the potential of this rapidly expanding sector, noting that while India's sustainable tourism market currently stands at approximately Rs. 320 crore (US$ 37.4 million), it is expected to experience robust growth. In terms of global comparisons, sustainable tourism worldwide is set to grow from Rs. 2,67,07,200 crore (US$ 3.12 trillion) in FY23 to Rs. 9,75,84,000 crore (US$ 11.4 trillion) in the next 10 years, making up 10% of total travel.
He further shared that sustainable tourism currently accounts for just 1 to 2% of all tourism in India, starkly contrasting with global figures. The Indian Ministry of Tourism has laid out a comprehensive National Strategy for Sustainable Tourism, which includes promoting environmental sustainability, protecting biodiversity, and encouraging socio-cultural and economic sustainability. As part of its initiatives, the Ministry has launched the Travel for Lifestyle for the Environment (LiFE) programme to encourage tourists and businesses to adopt sustainable practices. Additionally, the revamped Swadesh Darshan 2.0 scheme focuses on developing responsible and sustainable destinations, with an emphasis on benefiting local communities while preserving the environment. These measures reflect the government's commitment to ensuring tourism contributes positively to India's economy and sustainability goals.
