Soybean production in the country has increased by around 6% to nearly 126 lakh tonnes during the current kharif season, driven by favourable weather conditions, according to the Soybean Processors Association of India (SOPA). The acreage remained almost the same as last year, with the average productivity rising from 1,002 kg per hectare in the previous season to 1,063 kg per hectare this year, SOPA Executive Director Mr. D N Pathak told PTI. He attributed the improved yield to good monsoon distribution in key soybean-producing regions and the adoption of advanced farming methods. However, a 3-week dry spell in August negatively impacted crop productivity in some areas.

As per SOPA's estimates, soybeans were sown in 118.32 lakh hectares this season, yielding 125.82 lakh tonnes, compared to 118.55 lakh hectares and 118.74 lakh tonnes last year. Madhya Pradesh, the largest soybean producer, saw 52 lakh hectares sown with a production of 55.40 lakh tonnes. Maharashtra is expected to produce 50.17 lakh tonnes from 45 lakh hectares. Rajasthan recorded a yield of 10.53 lakh tonnes from 11.13 lakh hectares. With India importing around 60% of its edible oil requirements, experts stress the importance of increasing oilseed production to achieve self-sufficiency. The central government has raised the minimum support price (MSP) of soybeans for the 2024-25 season to US$ 58.23 (Rs. 4,892) per quintal, up from US$ 54.75 (Rs. 4,600) in the previous year.
