India’s rice exports are projected to grow by over 10% in volume during FY25, supported by strong global demand, according to the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), Chairman, Mr. Abhishek Dev. In 2024-25, India exported 20.1 million tonnes of rice worth Rs. 1,14,802 crore (US$ 12.95 billion) to more than 172 countries. He stated that both volume and value of rice exports are expected to increase this fiscal year, with India aiming to expand its footprint across new markets. Speaking at the Bharat International Rice Conference (BIRC) 2025 in New Delhi, he highlighted the need to boost exports of diverse rice varieties and rice-based processed products such as rice crackers.
APEDA has identified 26 countries, including the Philippines, with significant potential to increase rice imports from India, and plans to send delegations to promote Indian rice varieties. The Indian Rice Exporters’ Federation (IREF), which organized the two-day global conference at Bharat Mandapam, has invited trade representatives from these countries. The event saw participation from around 10,000 delegates, including producers, exporters, importers, policymakers, and researchers. India remains one of the world’s largest rice producers and exporters, accounting for nearly 28% of global output. The country produced around 150 million tonnes of rice from 47 million hectares in 2024-25, with yields rising to 3.2 tonnes per hectare, supported by improved seed varieties, better agronomic practices, and expanded irrigation coverage.
