Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Mr. Ashwini Vaishnaw, highlighted significant progress in India’s semiconductor sector at the SEMICON India summit at the India Expo Mart. He announced that 5 semiconductor units have been approved and are under construction, including the Micron and Morigaon Tata units, with construction for the remaining 3 set to begin soon. He also mentioned that the government is preparing to introduce Semicon 2.0 in the next 3-4 months, an expanded version of the existing semiconductor policy. He noted that 3 to 4 states have attracted semiconductor investments, with a new unit planned for Uttar Pradesh.

He emphasized the government’s commitment to developing a robust talent pool, aiming to train 85,000 engineers and technicians over the next decade. He highlighted the Lam Research Semiverse Programme, which has trained 2,600 students this year across 74 universities. He mentioned AMB’s inauguration of its first global design centre in Bengaluru, which employs around 5,000 engineers. Applied Materials has also launched its first India validation centre. He projected that the growth of semiconductor units would drive exponential expansion across automotive, medical, industrial, transport, and consumer electronics industries, aligning with Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi’s vision to democratize technology access through initiatives like Digital India and Telecom missions.
