India’s renewable energy sector achieved a significant milestone in H1 2025, with record generation from solar and wind sources, contributing to a substantial reduction in power sector emissions, according to a report by global energy think tank Ember. Solar power output rose by 17 terawatt-hours (TWh), marking a 25% increase from H1 2024 and raising its share in total electricity generation to 9.2% from 7.4%. Wind power production grew by 11 TWh, or 29%, now accounting for 5.1% of total electricity. Other clean energy sources also recorded gains, with nuclear power increasing by 14% and hydro power rebounding by 17% after a decline last year. As a result of this growth in renewable generation, coal-based power output fell by 22 TWh (3.1%) and gas-based generation declined by 34%, leading to a reduction of 24 million tonnes in carbon dioxide emissions compared to H1 2024.
The report highlighted that electricity demand grew modestly by 1.3% during H1 2025, the slowest since the COVID-19 pandemic, due to milder weather, reduced industrial activity, and lower cooling requirements, as air conditioners consume nearly one-fifth of India’s total power capacity. Despite this subdued demand, renewable energy nearly met all new electricity requirements, decreasing reliance on fossil fuels. Ember noted that electricity demand is likely to rise in H2 2025, which may lead to a slight increase in coal-based power use. However, the growth of solar, wind, nuclear, and hydro power is expected to remain the primary driver of India’s transition towards a cleaner, more sustainable energy mix.
