India has joined an elite group of five nations with an indigenously developed 4G technology stack now ready for exports, marking a milestone in technological self-reliance, Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi announced at the inauguration of the India Mobile Congress (IMC). He said the new 4G stack would deliver faster internet speeds, more reliable services, and seamless connectivity, strengthening India’s digital edge. He highlighted India’s journey from 2G struggles to achieving nationwide 5G coverage, adding that digital connectivity is now integral to citizens’ lives. He noted that mobile phone production has increased 28 times since 2014, while exports have surged 127 times, and electronics manufacturing has grown six-fold. He emphasised that India’s manpower, mobility, and mindset position it to lead globally and encouraged investment in sectors such as semiconductors, electronics, and startups, aided by initiatives like the Digital Innovation Square and the Telecom Technology Development Fund.

He also stressed the government’s focus on cyber security and data sovereignty, with stronger laws against cyber fraud and improved grievance redressal systems. He said global supply chain disruptions offer India opportunities, especially in semiconductor manufacturing, where work is underway on 10 units. Union Minister for Communications Mr. Jyotiraditya Scindia highlighted that the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for telecom equipment manufacturing has generated Rs. 91,000 crore (US$ 10.25 billion) in production, Rs. 18,000 crore (US$ 2.03 billion) in exports, and 30,000 new jobs. He added that broadband users have risen to 944 million, with 99.9% of districts now covered by 5G. IMC, Asia’s largest digital technology event, hosts over 7,000 delegates and 400 companies, attracting 1,50,000 visitors from more than 150 countries.
