India achieved a significant milestone in renewable energy installations, adding 34.40 GW of new solar and wind capacity during the first nine months of 2025, marking a 71% rise compared to the same period last year. According to Founder and CEO, JMK Research, Ms. Jyoti Gulia, solar capacity increased by 68.90%, while wind installations grew by an even stronger 88.80%. The capacity addition in the first nine months of 2025 has already surpassed the total additions recorded in 2024, indicating strong growth momentum in the sector. India’s overall renewable energy installed capacity reached 247.30 GW as of September 2025, with solar accounting for 52%, wind 21%, large hydro 20%, bio power 5%, and small hydro 2%.
Between January and September 2025, the country added 22.50 GW of utility-scale solar capacity, reflecting a 70% jump YoY, with nearly half of this capacity commissioned in Q3 2025 alone. Rooftop solar installations grew by 81% YoY, with 5.80 GW added during the same period. Public Sector Banks sanctioned over 5.79 lakh loan applications worth Rs. 10,907 crore (US$ 1.31 billion) for rooftop solar projects. In the off-grid and distributed solar segment, 1.17 GW was added, up 13% from last year. In comparison, wind energy capacity rose 4.96 GW between January and September 2025. She projected this momentum to continue, with another 11-12 GW expected in the final quarter, bringing India’s total solar and wind additions to a record 45-46 GW by end-2025.
