Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), backed by the GMR Group, plans to increase Indira Gandhi International Airport’s annual passenger handling capacity by about 20%, from the current 10.5 crore to 12.5 crore by 2029-30. The expansion will be achieved without replacing Terminal Two immediately. Chief Executive Officer Delhi International Airport Limited, Mr. Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, said the growth will come primarily from the construction of Pier E at Terminal three, which will add 1-1.2 crore passengers annually, help decongest terminal one, and create additional aircraft parking bays. The airport operator is finalising the master plan to determine whether the new pier will serve domestic or international passengers.
Terminal three currently operates four piers, two each for domestic and international flights, with one domestic pier set to be converted for international use this winter. The long-term development plan includes demolishing the 1986-built Terminal Two to build a larger, modern facility. However, the timing will depend on passenger growth and the operational impact of Noida International Airport, which opens this winter. The refurbished T2 reopened on October 26. DIAL typically begins new capacity expansion once footfall reaches 80% of total capacity, expected around 10 crore passengers, aligning with the airport’s projected growth trajectory.
