Blue-collar workforce in India saw a 7% rise in hiring in 2023: Indeed report

In its year-end report, the global hiring and matching platform Indeed, disclosed a notable 7.40% upswing in the recruitment of blue-collar workers in India throughout 2023. The study, spanning from January to November 2023, encompassed insights from 1,223 employers, 2,671 blue-collar jobseekers, and 2,637 white-collar jobseekers.

In the second edition of its blue-collar hiring tracker (BHT), Indeed highlighted logistics, construction and real estate, and tourism and hospitality as the leading sectors offering lucrative employment opportunities. Kolkata emerged as the primary metropolitan city showcasing significant growth in hiring, followed closely by Pune and Chandigarh. This trend underscores the evolving dynamics of the blue-collar workforce landscape in India, with specific industries and cities leading the way in fostering employment opportunities.

The survey attributes robust job growth in Tier-II cities to factors like SMB expansion, urbanization, and a cost-effective labour market. Blue-collar employers favour Gen Z candidates (49%), while white-collar employers seek millennials (41%). Key skills include driving (53%) and machine operation (33%), with teamwork (79%) and communication (79%) being essential soft skills. Employers predominantly hire for entry-level positions. Looking ahead, 42% express interest in AI integration in 2024, with 19% having already implemented it. Head of Sales at Indeed India, Ms. Sashi Kumar underscores the significant hiring growth in Tier-II cities in 2023 and advocates upskilling for a brighter 2024.
