In the fiscal year 2024, Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata (SMP Kolkata), comprising Kolkata Dock System (KDS) and Haldia Dock Complex (HDC), achieved a significant milestone by handling 66.4 million metric tonnes (MMT) of cargo, marking a 1.11% increase from the previous record. Chairman, Mr. Rathendra Raman attributed this success to strategic initiatives focusing on productivity, safety measures, and business development. HDC notably handled 49.54 MMT, setting a record, while KDS managed 16.856 MMT. Financially, the port demonstrated strength with a net surplus of US$ 60.2 million (Rs. 501.73 crore), a 65% growth over the previous year.
To enhance capacity, SMP Kolkata is prioritising Public-Private Partnership (PPP) projects, including two awarded projects worth US$ 57.6 million (Rs. 480 crore) and three more nearing the award stage by 2024-25. Major projects completed in FY24 include drainage network development and energy-efficient implementations. Additionally, the port completed four projects totalling US$ 24.1 million (Rs. 201.23 crore). HDC and KDS showed growth across various sectors, reflecting the port's overall progress and strategic focus.
