According to official data from the Jal Jeevan Mission, about 77% or 14.88 crore rural households in India now have access to tap water connections. This progress is part of the mission's effort to provide safe and adequate drinking water through individual household tap connections by 2024. The country's total number of rural households is reported to be 19.31 crore, highlighting significant strides towards achieving nationwide coverage.

The data reveals that eleven states and Union Territories (UTs) have achieved full coverage of 100% in rural areas, marking substantial milestones in water accessibility. Furthermore, 16 states and UTs have achieved tap water coverage ranging from 75% to 100%, underscoring ongoing efforts to expand infrastructure and reach underserved communities. However, challenges remain in states like Rajasthan and West Bengal, where tap water coverage remains below 50%, indicating the need for targeted interventions to accelerate progress in these regions.
