5% of the world’s 5G users in India

Six months after the launch of 5G service in India, the number of 5G customers has surpassed 50 million. By December 31, 2022, the proportion of 5G consumers in the country's total customer base has reached 4.37%. It is estimated that the total 4G subscriber base is at 773 million. By the end of 2022, India had 5% of the world's 1 billion 5G consumers.

According to a study by Ericsson Mobility, Western Europe was estimated at 63 million 5G customers (11.5% penetration). China is the top market with 644 million 5G subscribers, or around 38% of the global share followed by North America with 141 million 5G subscribers.

By the end of 2024, Omdia predicts India will have over 150 million 5G subscribers. By 2028, according to Ericsson, India would be the second-largest market for 5G subscribers after China.

Their 5G tower count has surpassed 1,16,000, accounting for 15% of the total tower count. Reliance Jio has covered 50,000 towers and installed 3,000,000 radios. Around 100,000 radios have been installed by Bharti Airtel.

According to sources, the two businesses have covered over 500 cities with a minimum of 20% penetration. The coverage has reached 70% in some cities, including New Delhi.
