Tripura is one of the seven states in the northeast. Tripura acts as a gateway between Northeast India and Bangladesh. The state shares an 856-km international border with Bangladesh. This offers enormous potential for international trade. Tripura is endowed with rich and diverse bamboo resources and is the largest bamboo producing hub in India. The state has an area of 7,195 hectares to produce bamboo. Tripura holds a strong tea plantation base in India, with 54 tea gardens covering an area of 12,832 hectares, as of June 2025.
Tripura possess huge potential yet relatively unexplored sectors such as organic spices, biofuel, and eco- tourism. It is rich in natural resources such as natural gas, rubber, tea, and medicinal plants. The state is also known for its vibrant food processing, bamboo, and sericulture industries. Tripura is one of the largest natural rubber producers in the country. Production of rubber in the state stood at 74,139 million tonnes (MT) in 2018-19 compared to 46,815 MT in 2014-15
At current prices, Tripura’s Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) stood at Rs. 1,007.95 billion (US$ 11.80 billion) in FY26. GSDP increased at a CAGR of 8.9% between FY16 and FY26.
As per the third advance estimate of 2023-24, the total fruit production in the state is 617.55 thousand MT, vegetables are 1147.71 thousand MT, plantation is 45.71 thousand MT and spices is 26.50 thousand MT.
The state is also rich in natural gas deposits, glass sands, limestone, plastic clay, and hard rock. With its pleasant climate and scenic landscape, Tripura is a favoured tourist destination. The state offers tourist attractions such as historical Hindu and Buddhist sites, temples, rivers, and rock carvings. In 2019, the number of foreign tourist arrival in the state was recorded to be 154,405.
As of April 2026, Tripura had a total installed power generation capacity of 685.09 MW, of which 105 MW was under state utilities, 529.66 MW was under central utilities and 50.43 MW was under the private sector.
Of the total installed capacity, 542.94 MW was contributed by thermal power, 86.47 MW by hydropower and 55.88 MW by renewable resources, as of April 2026.
According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Tripura had 3.49 million wireless and 0.05 million wireline subscribers, as of December 2025.
Tripura had a total tele-density of 83.35%, as of December 2025.
The number of internet subscribers in Tripura stood at 2.73 million, as of December 2025.
According to the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), between October 2019-March 2026, FDI inflow in Tripura stood at Rs. 11.72 crore (US$ 1.45 million).
Total merchandise exports from the state stood at Rs. 135 crore (US$ 15.04 million) in FY26.
Tripura exported key items such as engineering goods, fruits and vegetables, spices, and others.
Tripura has 93.7% literacy rate, higher than the national average rate, making it an ideal destination for knowledge sectors.
Some of the major initiatives taken by the Government to promote Tripura as an investment destination are:
- In August 2025, Tripura’s Chief Minister approved Rs. 87 crore (US$ 9.97 million) for infrastructure upgrades, including Rs. 32.33 crore (US$ 3.7 million) for Agartala roads and drains and Rs. 55.16 crore (US$ 6.32 million) for maintaining 129.5 km of PMGSY roads.
- Under the State Budget FY27, Tripura allocated Rs. 1,190.44 crore (US$ 129.4 million) towards Urban Development, reflecting the state's continued focus on strengthening urban infrastructure, municipal services and planned urbanisation.
- Under the State Budget FY27, Tripura allocated Rs. 6,439.56 crore (US$ 699.95 million) to the Education sector, highlighting the government's emphasis on strengthening school education, higher education, sports and skill development to support long-term human capital formation.
- Under the State Budget FY27, Tripura allocated Rs. 1,985.61 crore (US$ 215.8 million) towards Agriculture & Allied Activities, underscoring the state's focus on enhancing agricultural productivity, supporting allied sectors and improving rural livelihoods.
- Under the State Budget FY27, Rs. 2,441.50 crore (US$ 265.4 million) was allocated to Health & Family Welfare, aimed at improving healthcare infrastructure, expanding access to medical services and strengthening public health delivery across the state.
Tripura, a northeastern state bordering Bangladesh on three sides and Assam and Mizoram to the east, offers strong agro-based and resource-driven opportunities. The state benefits from fertile agro-climatic conditions supporting rice, fruits, horticulture, rubber, spices and tea, with 54 tea gardens spread over 12,832 hectares. Rich reserves of natural gas, limestone and medicinal plants underpin industrial potential, while tourism is supported by scenic landscapes and heritage sites. With a high literacy rate of 93.7%, improving road, rail and air connectivity, reliable power capacity of 656.98 MW, and policy support under the Industrial Investment Promotion Scheme, the state presents a conducive environment for investment across agriculture, energy, tourism and manufacturing sectors.
